‎Ga West MCE and MP Distribute Relief Items to Flood Victims in Amasaman ‎

The Municipal Chief Executive of Ga West Municipal Assembly, Hon. John Desmond Sowah Nai, and the Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Hon. Sedem Kweku Afenyo, have distributed relief items to residents affected by recent flooding in Oduman, Manhean, Nsakina and Medie.

‎They were joined by officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, and other assembly delegates.

‎

‎The relief package included buckets, bowls, rice, cooking oil, student mattresses, blankets, cups, and mosquito nets for households in the four communities.

‎

‎Speaking to the press, Hon. Sedem Kweku Afenyo , MP for Amasaman,said the exercise was carried out in line with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to support all flood victims in the Ga West Municipality.

‎“The donation may not be enough to replace everything people have lost, but it will provide some immediate support. It is being given to those whose names appear on the official list,” the MP stated.

‎

‎He also urged residents of Oduman and surrounding areas to maintain clean environments and stop dumping refuse into drains, which he said worsens flooding.

‎

‎Also addressing the gathering, the MCE, Hon. John Desmond Sowah Nai, said the assembly is working with traditional authorities to enforce the President’s directive on waterways.

‎

‎“We will deal with anyone who blocks the free flow of water and we will remove all structures sited on waterways,” he said.

‎

‎He stressed that attitudinal change is central to preventing future disasters. 

‎“My priority is to build a culture where people do not wait for National Sanitation Day to clean. We must embrace daily cleanliness to collectively fight disastrous flooding in Ghana,” Hon. Nai noted.

‎

‎He called on religious leaders, traditional leaders, and schools to sustain advocacy for daily cleanliness and said the assembly is open to partnerships to make this possible.

‎

‎The MCE further announced that the assembly is ready to facilitate the free replacement of Ghana Cards and NHIS cards for residents who lost theirs in the floods.
