ACCRA - The Animal Welfare League [AWL], an advocacy organization dedicated to improving animal welfare across Africa, has honoured six hotels in Accra with its maiden ,Hospitality and Heart Awards’, for demonstrating leadership in ethical animal welfare practices.
The awards, held under the theme *“Promoting Good Animal Welfare Practice in Africa,”* seek to recognize hotels that prioritize the welfare of chickens, eggs, and fish before consumption.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Emmanuel Yameche, Senior Communications Officer of AWL, said the initiative was designed to celebrate corporate institutions that integrate animal welfare into their operations.
“This program is to honor leadership that has shown keen interest in how chickens and eggs are treated before consumption. Out of 31 hotels assessed in Accra, only 6 qualified,” Dr. Yameche stated.
He noted that while this is the first edition of the awards, the bench-marking exercise began last year. He called on more hotels to prioritize animal welfare as a matter of public safety and sustainability.
AWL also expressed interest in partnering with the Ghana Standards Authority [GSA] and the Ghana Tourism Authority [GTA] to expand the program nationwide.
Adding his voice, Mr. Bless Koffie, Sales and Marketing Manager Representative for African Regent Hotel, said animal welfare remains a top priority for the hotel.
“The Animal Welfare League’s goal aligns with our commitment to sustainability and preserving animals for the next generation. As a hotel, we conduct checks at various supply sources to ensure the safety and ethical treatment of animals before patronage,” Mr. Koffie said.
He further urged the public and industry players to engage AWL for education and support on transitioning to cage-free systems for poultry.
The ‘Hospitality and Heart Awards’ marks the beginning of AWL’s broader campaign to work with Ghana’s hospitality sector to drive ethical sourcing and responsible consumption across Africa.
