ACCRA — Amid a rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Ghana, St. Michael Specialist Hospital has launched a free public health screening initiative aimed at early detection and community sensitization.

The outreach, held as part of the medical facility's third-anniversary celebrations, seeks to address the growing burden of heart-related conditions through proactive healthcare delivery and public education.

Addressing the Surge in Cardiovascular Disease

Speaking to the press, Mrs. Ernestina Akoaboah, Nurse Manager at St. Michael Specialist Hospital, emphasized that the primary objective of the screening is to dramatically reduce the impact of cardiac diseases through targeted awareness and timely medical intervention.

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Genevieve Ama Brown, a family physician at the hospital, noted that the free screening serves as a vital corporate social responsibility initiative to give back to the community during their milestone anniversary.

"We urge families to be conscious of cardiac issues at the early stages by visiting their nearest healthcare facilities, maintaining regular exercise routines, and adopting healthy dietary habits," Dr. Brown stated.

A Shift Toward Younger Demographics

Clinical Coordinator Dr. Laurencia Ankuma drew attention to a concerning epidemiological shift, revealing that cardiac complications are increasingly affecting younger populations rather than being confined to older adults.

"Donating blood and screening for cardiac diseases is of the utmost importance right now because we are discovering that young people are battling these diseases, and it is no longer just an issue for the aged," Dr. Ankuma explained.

She strongly advised the public to prioritize early detection, which remains critical to saving lives before conditions reach advanced stages.
