Coastal Youth Oshiyie Holds 2nd Edition of New Year’s Walk to reduce unemployment in the community

The vibrant community of Oshiyie witnessed the successful 2nd edition of the Coastal Youth New Year’s Walk on January 4, 2025. Organized by the Coastal Youth leadership, the event aimed to promote health, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose among the youth of Oshiyie and its neighbouring communities.

According to the president of Coastal Youth, the walk serves as a platform to bring the youth together and celebrate the New Year with love and togetherness. "This walk is to bring all the youth in Oshiyie together to walk for health and to start the New Year on a positive note. Often, during this season, the youth of Oshiyie and nearby communities find ways to have fun, so we decided to organize this event to foster unity and celebrate within our community," he stated.

The president emphasized plans to make the walk an annual tradition, with hopes of incorporating art and culture to enrich the event in the coming years. “If art and culture can be added, it will bring more value and make the event bigger next year. This will also help showcase the rich cultural heritage of Oshiyie,” he added.

Addressing youth unemployment, the leadership of Coastal Youth revealed their plans to build a database of skilled individuals within the community. “We have many skilful but unemployed youth in Oshiyie. By documenting their capabilities—be it masonry, carpentry, tiling, or other trades—we can connect them to opportunities and promote economic growth,” the president noted.

Community members and potential employers were encouraged to reach out for skilled labour, with the assurance of accessing competent workers from the community.

Nii Agyiri, the Mbrantehene of Ashalaka, applauded the initiative for bringing the youth together and called on the Ministry of Arts and Culture to collaborate with Oshiyie in future events to promote their traditions and heritage. He also used the platform to appeal to the newly elected president to address pressing developmental challenges in Oshiyie, including poor roads, inadequate water systems, lack of schools, and the urgent need for a hospital.
