AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ON DEATH SENTENCES

The reports focused on key insights into Ghana's human rights status, while the death penalty report highlights the progress of campaigns following the passage of the two bills, the criminal offenses Act, Act 29(1960) and the Ghana armed forces Act 105 (1962) in July 2023 with calls for a constitutional amendment to remove the death penalty in Ghana completely.

Speaking at the launch of the amnesty international report and death sentences and execution report in  Accra, board vice chairperson of Amnesty international Ghana, Charity Batuure gave key highlights of the report.

Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Genevieve Partington called for a presidential action on the bill to criminalize witchcraft accusations and a permanent end to death sentencing.

She also called for the scrapping of the Human sexual right and family bill which she maintains it further criminalizes LGBTQI people.

On death sentences and executions, the report shows that, Amnesty International recorded 1518 executions in 2024 in 15 countries, a 32% increase from the 1153 known executions in 2023, the highest figure recorded by Amnesty International since 2015 when it recorded 1634 executions.
