Over 250 Residents in East Legon-La Bawaleshie Benefit from Free Health Screening Exercise


More than 250 residents of East Legon-La Bawaleshie received free medical check-ups during a day-long health screening exercise dubbed “Free Medical Screening: My Health, My Life 2.0” held at the La-Bawaleshie Community Square.



The initiative aligns with Rotary International’s Disease Prevention and Treatment focus area, a commitment that lies at the heart of Rotary’s #PeopleOfAction agenda to strengthen communities through improved healthcare access.



The residents were screened from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the 24th of May 2025,for a wide range of health indicators including blood pressure, body temperature, pulse, weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), and tested for malaria, hepatitis B, and typhoid , all at no cost.



This significant exercise was the second edition of the Free Medical Screening Exercise organized by the Rotaract Club of Accra-East Legon (RoCAEL) in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Accra-East, Rotaract Club of Kumasi, and with critical support from several health institutions and companies.



The event also marks RoCAEL’s first major community-based outreach in East Legon since its founding five years ago, which was made possible through the support of the La Bawaleshie Traditional Council, who granted access to the town square for the exercise.



Rotaractors with backgrounds in health sciences played key roles at several medical booths, assisting with lab work, testing, and dispensing medication. 



Other members led community engagement efforts, going door to door to invite residents, encourage participation, and introduce the work of Rotary and Rotaract to the local community.Supporting Partners Letap Pharmacy, under its "Quality Health Care" initiative, donated almost all the medications used during the screening.


Josey’s Health Corner sent a team of doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and dietitians to run the various booths and assist with consultations.Besa Pharma and Diagnostic Centre Ltd. provided essential diagnostic equipment and helped with data collection and vitals recording. Both institutions have supported the project in previous editions as well.



Community Feedback several residents expressed deep appreciation for the exercise, praising the convenience, professionalism, and friendliness of the health teams. One elderly woman said, “I haven’t had my blood pressure checked in years — and today, they even gave me medicine for free. 



God bless all of them.”RoCAEL President, Divine Mawuena, described the event as a "milestone" in the club’s mission to give back directly to its own catchment community. 


He added that the club looks forward to deepening its presence in East Legon through more regular outreach programs.


He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the strong support of partners and volunteers, and overwhelming participation from the community, organizers say the success of this edition is proof that community-led health interventions are not only possible but powerful.
