Gambling Is Not Necessarily Bad, But Its Abuse! ... Says Jerry Wonder Sampson

Gaming operator and media personality Jerry Wonder Sampson, has debunked the idea of gambling as a totally negative business venture.

He stated that despite the fact that gambling must be controlled by necessary measures and only patronized by matured persons, this shouldn't create the perception that gambling is totally negative. He cited some benefits of gambling and called on the government to fully explore gambling as a tourism opportunity. He said this yesterday in an interview in Accra.

Gambling has been described as a dirty sport, but Gaming operator and media personality Jerry Wonder Sampson thinks it's a false perception which underestimates the potential of the gaming industry in Ghana.

"You may check the figures of the monies being brought in as revenue by the gaming industry. Might not be as huge as some, but, it's still significant. For instance, sports betting operators pay about $500,000 for their licence annually and we have quite a number of them and more are coming. So, you can see that gambling is not bad but it's abuse which leads to irresponsible gambling", he said.

Jerry Wonder advised that the Government should explore the gaming industry for additional benefits while maintaining strict responsible gaming practices.

" I think we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water. Gambling or gaming can become a tourism earner for Ghana. Look at Las Vegas. We can designate one of our islands or a highly secured area inland and set it up as a gaming city with lots of casinos, hotels, banks and so on, for the high earned and upper class bank rollers. This place will be out of bounds to persons based on a debit card system with a threshold of say about $10, 000. With that, only persons who can afford to gamble will be allowed access", he explained.

Finally, Jerry Wonder emphasized the need to explore Casino Tourism as a game changer in Ghana's economy. "Ghana is a peaceful country with great weather. Tourists already come here to patronize our culture and history. But, it's time to spice things up a bit and move into entertainment. Gambling is entertainment and is already a big global earner.

In 2024, Casinos brought in a gross gaming revenue of over $15 billion in Nevada state alone and a total of approximately $72 billion in the United States.

We can replicate that here. But, Ghana must activate casino tourism now and see gambling for its potential and not just the negatives", he said.
