Adenta Marks World Breastfeeding Week with Strong Advocacy for Exclusive Breastfeeding
As part of activities marking World Breastfeeding Week 2025, the Adenta Municipal Health Directorate has called on mothers to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practices for at least the first six months after childbirth, emphasizing its long-term health benefits for both mother and child.
Speaking at the event held in Adenta, the Municipal Health Director, Dr. Priscilla Amina Poku, highlighted exclusive breastfeeding as a critical tool in preventing early childhood illnesses, particularly Type 2 diabetes in newborns.
“Exclusive breastfeeding for six months provides a protective effect against childhood diseases and lays the foundation for a healthier future. It even plays a role in preventing Type 2 diabetes,”
The 2025 celebration brought together health professionals, civil society groups, and community stakeholders in a united front to raise awareness about the life-saving benefits of breastfeeding. Dr. Poku also stressed that exclusive breastfeeding supports proper brain development, boosts immunity, and significantly reduces healthcare costs for families.
“Breastfeeding not only protects the child, but also the mother. It’s been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer and improves overall well-being,”
World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually in the first week of August and is championed globally by WHO, UNICEF, national ministries of health, and advocacy groups. The theme continues to emphasize breastfeeding as a cornerstone of public health, development, and equity across communities.
Mothers and caregivers in Adenta were encouraged to seek support from healthcare providers and prioritize exclusive breastfeeding to give their babies the healthiest start in life.
