‎The month of September has officially been designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, with activities scheduled to commence on Friday, August 5, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

‎In preparation for the launch, a medical team from the hospital paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Adabraka to formally invite him and the community to actively participate in the program.

‎Speaking to the media, Dr. Niat Salisu, a childhood cancer specialist at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, emphasized that the awareness initiative will extend beyond hospital walls into the Adabraka community. According to her, the campaign aims to promote early detection since many childhood cancer cases are diagnosed late, despite being curable.

‎“Each year in Ghana, between 1,200 and 1,500 cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed, but sadly, many children are brought in at a stage when it is too late to save them,” Dr. Salisu revealed. She further outlined several early warning signs and highlighted the need for parents, guardians, and community leaders to be vigilant.

‎Currently, Ghana has nine community centers equipped to manage childhood cancer cases, ensuring that children can receive timely treatment from local CHPS compounds up to advanced referral facilities such as Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

‎Dr. Salisu called on churches, mosques, and families to intensify education and advocacy, stressing that “no child should be left behind” in this campaign.

‎Adding her voice, Naa Korkor Ayor I, Queen Mother of Adabraka, welcomed the hospital’s outreach, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen community advocacy. She pledged to support the initiative by encouraging widespread education within Adabraka on the importance of early detection and treatment.
