University of Ghana - Africa Climate Collaborative formally UG-CCReS awarded scholarships fellows

‎The University of Ghana has held its maiden awards ceremony to recognize outstanding fellows under the University of Ghana - Africa Climate Collaborative formally UG-CCReS for Resilience and Sustainability (UG-CCReS) initiative. 



The event celebrated recipients of the UG-CCReS Fellowships,targeted at master’s, PhD, and postdoctoral candidates,as well as beneficiaries of the Catalyst Grants, designed to support innovative climate research across the continent.


‎Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, announced that 69 awards were presented through the support of The MasterCard Foundation. She emphasized that the program aims to build human capacity in addressing climate change and its associated challenges across Africa.

‎Prof. Amfo reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring that the fellowship extends beyond Ghana’s borders, reflecting a continental strategy to empower future climate leaders. She highlighted that the UG-Africa Climate Collaborative has agreed to an eight-year partnership focusing particularly on women and persons with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity in climate resilience efforts.



‎“Once their research is climate change-oriented, it is accepted,” she stated, urging the public to anticipate more rounds of awards to build the needed capacity across Africa.


‎Adding his remarks, Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and Program Director of UG-CCReS, noted that the program’s top priority is empowering young Africans with the skills and knowledge to create employment opportunities in the climate sector.

‎He further assured The MasterCard Foundation of the university’s commitment to transparency, promising close supervision of the funds allocated to each research project and diligent tracking of outcomes.



‎“We look forward to research excellence and measurable impact,” Prof. Awandare emphasized.



‎One of the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to the University of Ghana - Africa Climate Collaborative formally UG-CCReS and The MasterCard Foundation for the opportunity, pledging to inspire other young Africans to take up innovative roles in shaping a sustainable future for the continent.
