GFA and Enterprise Life Unveil Historic Insurance Scheme for Referees In a landmark development for Ghana’s football landscape, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has partnered with Enterprise Life to introduce the first-ever comprehensive insurance policy dedicated to referees.
The initiative delivers on a commitment made by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku during the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress in Prampram, marking a new chapter in safeguarding match officials across all domestic competitions.
The policy, covering 280 referees from the Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s Premier League, offers an all-inclusive protection package. It features Group Life Cover, Critical Illness Protection, Permanent Disability Compensation, Medical Expenses Support, and Workmen’s Compensation. Additional benefits extend to immediate family members—spouses, children, and parents—along with funeral support, reinforcing Enterprise Life’s comprehensive welfare-driven approach.
GFA President Kurt Okraku described the initiative as “a comprehensive welfare intervention designed to support, protect, and empower our referees across all domestic competitions.” He emphasized that the launch represents “a significant moment in the journey of our football,” acknowledging the essential role referees play in upholding fairness and integrity in the sport.
Top referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, who is set to officiate at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also praised the policy, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the GFA and Enterprise Life. He noted that the initiative feels “too good to be true,” adding that it addresses the long-standing welfare needs of match officials.
The collaboration between the GFA and Enterprise Life marks a transformative step toward strengthening officiating in Ghana. With enhanced protection, motivation, and support, referees can now perform their duties with greater confidence and peace of mind.
Referees Applaud the Initiative Among the first to express appreciation was Ghana’s elite referee, Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, who will officiate at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He described the initiative as “too good to be true,” noting that referees have long faced serious welfare challenges.
Laryea thanked GFA President Kurt Okraku and Enterprise Life for what he called a long-overdue recognition of the demands placed on officials. He also prayed that the insurance scheme “would outlast Kurt’s administration.”
Encouraging his colleagues, he urged referees to “give off their best” in light of the renewed confidence and support the policy provides.
This pioneering insurance scheme sets a benchmark for football governance across the continent, signaling Ghana’s commitment to elevating the welfare and professionalism of referees. As Ghana’s football ecosystem continues its growth trajectory, the GFA–Enterprise Life partnership is expected to drive lasting positive impact on the beautiful game.
