Let's reshape attitudes toward time management and productivity in Ghana - Hon.George Opare Addo
The Minister of Youth Development & Empowerment place emphasis on this at a strategic partnership meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana to roll out the nationwide “Red Means Stop” campaign aimed at empowering young people and promoting responsible attitudes among the youth community across Ghana.
The partnership meeting was held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the head office of the Christian Council of Ghana in Osu, Accra.
Addressing participants at the meeting, the Minister for Youth Development & Empowerment, George Opare Addo, stated that one of his top priorities since assuming office has been to help reshape attitudes toward time management and productivity as part of a broader national development agenda. He emphasized that changing mindsets around discipline and time use is critical to transforming Ghana’s development narrative.
According to the Minister, a longstanding gap exists in youth-focused development due to disproportionate attention previously placed on football and formal education alone. With the backing of President John Dramani Mahama, he said the Ministry has been given a clear mandate to focus exclusively on youth-related issues and deliver targeted interventions for young people across the country.
He explained that the Ministry is tasked with facilitating, coordinating, developing, and supervising all youth-centered policies and programs nationwide. He described the responsibility as both an honor and a personal commitment to ensure that Ghanaian youth are equipped to achieve their full aspirations.
The Minister noted that people under the age of 25 make up about 60% of Ghana’s population, stressing that young people face urgent challenges including substance abuse, mental health pressures, unemployment, and social vulnerability. He said these issues require immediate and coordinated responses through sustained investment in youth health, education, and civic engagement.
To address these concerns, the Ministry has outlined five key strategic focus areas: economic empowerment, community participation, youth health and well-being, education, and personal and leadership skills development.
Hon. Opare Addo highlighted collaboration as essential to achieving meaningful impact, pointing to the Christian Council of Ghana’s longstanding role in social transformation and moral leadership. He described the church as one of the most trusted institutions in Ghana and a powerful platform for promoting responsible citizenship and positive values.
He called for deeper collaboration with the Council and its member churches in areas such as career mentorship, scholarships, and apprenticeship training programs for young people across the country. He added that Ghana’s future depends on investing in youth today by equipping them with the right tools and opportunities.
In his remarks, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose, welcomed the partnership and described it as timely and necessary. He said the collaboration would help build a lasting legacy in youth development and national transformation going forward.
