IJM Convenes Landmark Summit to Strengthen Ghana’s Justice Response to Human Trafficking
In a strategic move to fortify the nation’s defense against modern slavery, the International Justice Mission (IJM) recently hosted the Public Justice System Leaders’ Summit on Human Trafficking. The high-level gathering aimed to bridge gaps between state institutions and foster a more unified front against traffickers.
The summit brought together key decision-makers and frontline responders from the Ghana Police Service, the Department of Social Welfare, and the Office of the Attorney General. Participants represented five critical regions: Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Volta, and Oti.
By convening these specific actors, IJM aims to streamline the "justice pipeline",ensuring that from the moment a victim is rescued to the final prosecution of a trafficker, no case falls through the cracks of bureaucracy.
Central to the summit’s agenda was the shift toward multidisciplinary and trauma-informed approaches. Experts emphasized that effective justice isn't just about securing convictions; it’s about handling survivors with the care necessary to prevent re-traumatization.
"Today focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration in order to effect sustainable change," said Anita Budu, Director of West Africa at IJM.
"We are looking forward to sustainable collaboration that ensures victims receive holistic care and protection." she noted
The engagement concluded with a strong call for deeper integration between agencies. Ms. Budu urged the general public to remain vigilant, advising citizens to report suspected signs of trafficking to the nearest Social Welfare office immediately.
" individual agency efforts are no longer enough. To dismantle trafficking networks in Ghana, the response must be collective, coordinated, and survivor-centered".
