Ghana Red Cross Society Announces Landmark $27 Million Ultra-Modern Humanitarian Hospital in Accra
Story By Azaglo Michael
In a major boost to the nation’s healthcare infrastructure, the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has officially unveiled plans to construct an ultra-modern humanitarian hospital in the Greater Accra Region. Estimated at $27 million, the facility is set to become a premier hub for emergency care, capacity building, and specialized medical services.
Speaking at the 2026 World Red Cross Day celebrations, the President of the GRCS, Dr. Edward Donkor, emphasized that the project is designed to bridge the gap in emergency medical access. He noted that the facility will serve all citizens regardless of political affiliation or social background.
"It is time to create a facility where everyone, regardless of community background, can find relief," Dr. Donkor stated. "This hospital will serve as a first aid training center and a critical hub for emergency care and capacity building."
While the flagship facility will be established in the capital, Dr. Donkor confirmed that this is only the first phase of a broader vision to extend similar specialized services to other regions across Ghana.
The project aims to integrate the Red Cross’s core strengths, including:
Emergency Response: Rapid care for disaster victims.
First Aid Excellence: A dedicated training hub for the public and professionals.
Social Care: Strengthening community hygiene and mental health support.
The Secretary-General of the GRCS, Mr. Eric Kotea, noted that this year’s initiatives are significantly more ambitious than previous years. Highlighting the need for collective action, he urged the public, corporate bodies, and international partners to support the $27 million fundraising goal.
"This project is a life-saving initiative where everyone has a role to play," Kotea added, stressing that unity within the society is the key to fulfilling this "mega" vision.
Established by Act 10 of 1958, the GRCS is Ghana’s leading volunteer-led humanitarian organization. For over six decades, it has remained at the forefront of disaster risk reduction, youth development, and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations.
