MP Calls for Prosecution of Persons Attacking Firefighters at International Memorial Service
Story By Azaglo Michael
In a powerful address marking the climax of International Firefighters’ Day, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Hon. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has issued a stern directive to the Ghana Police Service: apprehend and prosecute anyone found guilty of assaulting firefighters or damaging their equipment.
The event, held at the forecourt of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Greater Accra Regional Headquarters in Korle-Bu, served as a solemn memorial for "Firefighting Heroes" who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Speaking under the theme, "An Attack on Firefighters and Equipment is an Attack on Public Safety; End Assaults and Protect the Firefighter," Hon. Vanderpuije emphasized that the right to a safe working environment is a constitutional mandate.
"Every worker in Ghana has a right to safety under our Constitution," the MP stated. "The trend of attacking those who run toward danger to save others is unacceptable. I am calling on the Ghana Police Service to rise up and ensure that anyone found guilty of such acts faces the full rigors of the law."
The MP further urged the GNFS to intensify public sensitization efforts, teaching citizens the essentials of fire management within homes, schools, and religious institutions to foster a culture of cooperation rather than hostility.
Echoing these sentiments, the Greater Accra Regional Commander,ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu briefed the press on the detrimental impact of civilian interference.
A Partner in Development: The public should view the Fire Service as a vital pillar of national development, not an adversary.
Legality of Attacks: Assaulting a uniformed officer is a criminal offense and hampers emergency response times.
Emergency Preparedness: Citizens are strongly encouraged to memorize and use the official emergency numbers immediately during a fire outbreak rather than resorting to mob action.
The memorial service concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of silence for the fallen heroes. The GNFS reiterated its commitment to protecting life and property, provided the public grants them the safe environment required to perform their duties effectively.
