CIIG President Urges Insurance Association to Boycott Substandard Award Schemes

ACCRA, Ghana — The President of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG), Solomon Lartey, has called on the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) to follow the example of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG) by advising its members against participating in award schemes that lack operational integrity.




Lartey made the appeal during his address at the 6th CIIG Insurance Excellence Awards, held on August 29, 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel.


He further urged the National Insurance Commission (NIC) to enforce strict regulatory measures against unauthorized entities using insurance terminology without proper legal authorization.


The ceremony highlighted critical industry challenges, including disaster management and public awareness:

• Climate Resilience: Laurence Daniel, Country Director for the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), noted that the event's focal topic was tailored for students and emerging professionals in response to recent flooding across Ghana, emphasizing long-term prevention strategies.

• Proactive Protection: The 2025 Insurance Professional of the Year, Bernard Akyin-Arkoh, emphasized that securing appropriate policies ahead of time is essential for smooth claims processing. He advocated for nationwide public education to shift community mindsets from reactive recovery to proactive risk mitigation.

• Youth Engagement: Kentera Abongo Justice, winner of the tertiary competition category, shared that public encouragement motivated his return to the competition this year, adding that such platforms are vital for fostering
